First things first: if you don’t own any leather or faux leather, it’s time to add a piece or two to your wardrobe. It is timeless, bold, versatile and modern. Tips for Wearing Leather

Adding in leather can enhance your style while adding some boldness.  If you follow these few simple rules, you can look beautiful, sleek and trendy in your staple leather pieces.
  1. Fit is most important. Avoid items that are too tight or too baggy. You want it to have a tailored fit: make sure your leather garments have the right amount of stretch so you can move comfortably.
  2. Experiment with color. Of course, it’s necessary to keep neutral colors so your leather garment can coordinate with the majority of your wardrobe. However, don’t be afraid to try bold, bright colors.
  3. Don’t be afraid to layer. The key is to pick your pieces wisely. I highly recommend adding in accessories and going long with your other pieces (for example: wearing a tunic over leather pants or under a leather jacket).

Leather Pants

I’m a big believer that you can, and should, wear anything that you want as long as you feel great while wearing it; age shouldn’t scare you from adding a little edginess to your look. Leather pants are practical, and they can be dressed up or down, simply by changing tops and accessories. The key is having the right fit. You want to be comfortable and confident. Stay away from leather pants that are too tight and create a muffin top.

To balance the look of leather pants, aim for tight on the bottom and loose on the top. For this look, I chose to wear high waist bootcut brown leather pants paired with a bright green rib-knit cardigan. Leather pants look best when styled with silk blouses, graphic tees, lace camisoles, oversized sweaters, cashmere, and fur. Haven’t tried leather pants? I encourage you to go ahead and give them a try. Order a pair this weekend and spend some time styling them with the clothes you already have in your closet. This will help you get a sense of whether or not they are “you”.

Leather Jacket

Layering your leather jacket is a great way to create a fresh look.  A leather biker jacket is a great way to add some edge to your outfit, like I did here with this dress. Think of it as an edgier alternative to a blue jean jacket.  You can wear a leather jacket with casual pieces or simply weave it into a dressier look. I personally love wearing leather jackets with dresses and a pair of platform heels.

Lightweight leather jackets are perfect for shifting into a new season. Here in Georgia, we’re currently in that weird phase that occurs as we transition from Winter to Spring. This type of weather is ideal for throwing on a leather jacket. When looking for a leather jacket, don’t go in thinking black is the only way to go. I own several leather jackets and only one of them is black. There are lots of trendy colors out there, and oftentimes these are more flattering than black.

Leather Skirt

A leather skirt can be worn pencil straight, midi, maxi, or classic A-line. A-line skirts are good if you want a slimming look around your hips and thighs. But, there really is a leather skirt outfit for everyone – no matter your body shape. It’s easy to trick your mind into thinking  leather skirts mean tight and short, but nothing could be further from the truth. The key is choosing a timeless style that you can comfortably wear for many seasons to come.

Treat your leather skirt like you would any other capsule wardrobe building block, as a basic that can be easily molded for work or play. Switch things up by getting a style you wouldn’t normally associate with leather, such as a wrap style skirt.

As for color preferences, I prefer to purchase my leather skirts in neutral dark colors so they can be paired with bright sweaters and fun graphic shirts.

      Hi Beth,

Thank you for your kind words. Do you have any leather or faux leather pieces? All the leather I wore for this post was over 20 years old. I say you are never at an age you can’t wear leather. It’s all in the way you style it.
I hope you had a beautiful Valentine’s Day. Blessing and love to you and yours. xo
