Workout Clothes I Love

It’s no secret that working out is a great way to keep us looking and feeling better. Keeping our bodies moving and healthy is extremely important for our overall happiness. While staying fit over fifty can be challenging, it’s never too late to commit to a healthier lifestyle.

I have been an avid exerciser most of my life. I love working out and I love to look good doing it! Every year, when Spring rolls around- I do a big haul and purchase new workout clothes.  Now, I’m sure you’re asking yourself: do I have to have new trendy workout clothes to stay healthy? Of course not! But I sincerely believe that nice workout clothing can inspire us to feel better about ourselves. And since I have so much workout gear in my closet, I figure it would be a good idea to break down the workout clothes I love!

Being Active at a mature age

Being active can mean a daily stroll around the block, running 2-3 miles daily, 30 minutes of yoga, or extensive HIIT workouts at the gym – plus anything in between. What’s a 50-60-plus-year-old woman to do to make sure her exercise routine works? For me, being active involves going for a neighborhood run or jog each day. It’s important for you to find a routine you enjoy doing. It might be Zumba dancing, swimming, walking, running, biking, hot yoga or hiking. If you enjoy it, you’ll stick with it, and that’s the goal.

As you get older, your body and muscles will have more wear and tear on them. I can attest to this: as a 61-year-old woman, my joints have a lot more mileage on them than they did when I was 30! If you’re just starting to work out: be kind to yourself by listening to your body. Back off or alter your training routine when you experience pain.
Once you’ve chosen the type of exercise you plan to do, there is nothing more fun and motivating than finding new workout clothes to wear.  I’ve spent a good amount of time shopping for and trying out different workout clothes. While I love some of the top athleisure brands, I am not afraid to shop at Amazon or fitness boutique shops to find the best fitness gear! So, keep scrolling to see what I love!

TAKEDOWN Workout Apparel

TAKEDOWN is a boutique athleisure brand founded nearly two decades ago by one of my daughters’ high school friends, Dustin Kawa, a former Championship D-I wrestler. The brands mission is “to inspire confidence by elevating and empowering athletes and athletes at heart – through experience, style, and function”. I love that this workout gear is designed without sacrificing style or functionality. That’s key when shopping for the right athleisure wear.

Let’s take a look at some of the items I recently purchased from this brand.

High Waist Power Tech Leggings

These leggings are super soft! I purchased the black ones but they also come in Navy, Army Green, and Grey. They’re made from TAKEDOWN’s micro-performance fabric, they’re smooth and sculpts like no other. The only drawback is they don’t have pockets. However, the softness and second-skin fit of the leggings makes up for it. If you aren’t a fan of fitted leggings, then shop for a great pair of joggers. And don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t wear workout leggings because you are over 50!

Cropped Logo Tee

Leggings with t-shirts and sweatshirts are great choices for walking and jogging. While you can wear a simple everyday cotton t-shirt when you exercise, it’s best to invest in specialized workout tops that are comfortable and designed to wick out moisture. TAKEDOWN’s Cropped Logo Tee has a relaxed fit and hits just past the waistband. It’s made from breathable material that’s naturally soft. I love how the cropped tee compliments my shape. I purchased it in Pop Pink, but it comes in several colors including Navy, Black and White!

Athleta

Athleta has so many great pieces to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start. That’s why I’m sharing some of my Athleta must haves with you! I swear by Athleta and have several of their signature pieces in multiple colors. One thing I love about their athleisure wear is its durability. I have pieces in my closet right now that were purchased years ago, but I continue to wear them because they look as good as new.

I love their sports bras! They are really good if you do a lot of cardio or HIIT workouts. They’re also good for women who are heavier up top. Supporting your breasts with a well-fitted bra will make you feel better while you work out!

Have you been working out those legs and want to confidently show them off? The Salutation Stash 7″ Shorts from Athleta were a discovery about a year ago and they are perfect for flaunting those hips, thighs and calves. When it’s warm outside, I run in them, and I also wear them during HIIT workouts. I love that they don’t look too short on me.

Jackets/Sweatshirts

Workout jackets come in handy when you are working out in a chilly gym or if you’ve been sweating a lot in the gym and go outside to cooler temperatures. Layers are essential when you’re exercising outdoors. Whether you’re searching for a lightweight jacket to wear through every season or thick sweatshirt to keep you warm during the winter, Amazon has plenty of options to help you suit up in style.  The sweatshirt I’m wearing below is lightweight and supersoft. The peach color is perfect for Springtime.

There are many things to consider when it comes to picking the right running jacket. I recommend paying attention to the weight and flexibility of the material, water protection and of course style!

While these are just a few of my favorite workout brands, there are lots of great places to buy cute workout clothes! The best part? Most brands are inclusive of body types and carry a full range of sizes these days. Even if you have workout clothes from years ago, there are reasons to update them occasionally.  At the end of the day, it comes down to deciding what you need for your exercise routine and what actually looks good.

My biggest piece of advice: workout clothes for women over 50 shouldn’t be that different than when we were younger. Don’t be afraid to express your unique style in the gym!
