Winning Gameday Outfits

I don’t know about y’all, but I’m extremely excited for the start of college football. Not only is it the best time to spend time with friends while cheering on your favorite team, but you also get to wear really cute outfits. In the south, it is a tradition to get dressed up for game days and represent your team.  If you’ve been thinking of outfit ideas for the season- you’re in luck! Whether we’re watching the game at home or in-person, I always dress up!  These winning gameday outfits give cute examples of how-to show your school pride this season!

Gameday Traditions

My husband and I are big University of Tennessee fans…GO VOLS! Our whole family usually gets together for the games each weekend. We cook yummy appetizers and watch football. Sometimes my husband and I will make the drive to Knoxville and purchase tickets so we can watch the game in person! While I’ll be wearing orange & white all season long, I thought it would be helpful to put together gameday looks for 3 other SEC teams: Georgia, Auburn, and Alabama. Don’t cheer for any of those schools? No worries! You can easily recreate these looks with your favorite team’s colors!

Gameday Do’s & Don’ts

It’s best to have a mix of casual and dressy options for the season. You’re going to be doing a lot of walking (and sweating) in hot, humid weather. You want your gameday outfits to keep up with you, not hold you back.  Ideally, you want to wear something practical yet stylish. The best game day pieces are timeless: you can wear them for many seasons and reasons. Before we dive into the actual looks, let’s go over a few rules of game day fashion:

  • DO wear comfortable shoes. You’re going to do a lot of walking to and from the stadium. And if you like to tailgate-hop like me, it’s best to wear shoes that won’t hurt your feet 6 hours later.
  • DO wear comfortable, moisture-wick fabrics.
  • DO check the forecast before you head to the stadium. I always keep a poncho and small umbrella in my handbag
  • DON’T wear those brand-new heels for the first time to a college football game.
  • DON’T wear skin-tight dresses. You want to wear an outfit that’s easy to move in.
  • DON’T wear expensive jewelry to the game.

For a preppy-chic look, consider wearing Bermuda shorts that match your school colors, a top and an oversized blazer to tie it all together. Pair it with dressy flats for a cute look that’s perfect for cheering from the stands! At the time of writing this blog, the Bermuda shorts are on sale at Macy’s for only $21.12! They come in a variety of neutral colors that should work for most school colors!

I really like to wear dresses on gamedays to stay as cool as possible. You can never go wrong with a plaid dress. Not a fan of plaid? You can also wear a T-Shirt dress in your team’s colors for a stylish yet spirited look. Accessorize the dress with jewelry that’s your school colors to make the look pop and stand out.

Here’s a classic gameday outfit: white jeans and a cute top that match your school colors. If you want to elevate your school pride, pair the jeans with a collegiate t-shirt. This classic look will never get in the way of any tailgate activity.

For a super casual look, I paired these jean shorts and a tank with an oversized dress shirt that I decided to tie over.  On top of being super versatile, this layered look is guaranteed to keep you cool throughout the quarters.  This look is extremely flattering for those of us who have curves.
