Tricks of the Trade

As a stylist I get to work with so many different people. It’s one of the best things about what I do, because I enjoy meeting and making new friends. For me to be able to help people find their own personal style is rewarding and exciting. It’s also empowering for each person. Along with personal styling I also like to talk about hair and make-up, because it all goes together in my mind. And when I get to share the tricks of the trade, then it’s an added bonus.

I have a passion for make-up, and I’m a product junkie. It’s been a weakness of mine for a long time (this and my shoe addiction), but I can’t help myself. Like most women, I have my favorites that I have used for a while that are tried and true.

So before I get started, let me just say that skincare is huge in my book. You can purchase the best make-up, but if you aren’t taking care of your skin and eating right (this includes drinking LOTS of water), you’re kinda wasting your time and money. These are all my opinions and oh how I wished the Midlife me could have gone back and talked to the younger me. I would have a few things to say about sunscreen, skincare and diet.

As we age, there are a lot of changes. The shape of our face changes, brows thin, our lashes don’t seem to grow as long or as thick as they used to. I could list a bunch more, but let’s just focus on a few key issues one at a time. We don’t need to get overwhelmed.

The shape of our face changes. Our face isn’t as full as it used to be, or if we had full cheeks, they have now dropped to our jawline or neck. It is a part of the aging process, but that’s where contouring and highlighting are so important. I’ve used the Kat Von D contour palette and really like it. You can literally change the way your face looks by how you contour and highlight, and it doesn’t take that much time. It does make a big difference on how you look.

When your brows thin or turn lighter or white, they need to be filled in. It is what frames your eye, and just like a frame around a print or painting, enhances the art work, so the brow does the same for the eyes. It’s also crazy how thickening the brow and changing the arch and shape a little can make it appear you’ve had an eye lift.

Lashes that aren’t as thick or long can be remedied by false lashes or lash extensions. The false lashes are quick and easy to learn to do. They can be used over again multiple times if you take care of them. And they are fairly inexpensive. Lash extensions are great! They last as long as your natural lash does and will need to be filled in monthly. This is a little more pricey way to go, but for some folks they’re worth the money to not have to deal with lash strips.

Just by doing these few things, you will be amazed at the difference it makes. It will also knock years off of the way you look! Don’t believe me, try it and see.

Also pictured here is the foundation I have been using, which is “Born This Way” by Too Faced. It is medium to full coverage, but I use a lightly damp sponge (shown above) to blend and to apply sheer translucent powder. This application will give a light air brushed appearance.

Last but not least is Urban Decays “Chill” Make Up setting spray. This spray is wonderful and will help to guarantee your make up stays on all day. The Chill setting spray feels cool and refreshing when you spray it on your face. It’s really nice to use during warm weather month.
