Hair Care is something I get asked about a lot. So I’m going to answer some of the commonly asked questions for you all today. I hope this will be helpful for those of you who have gray or silver hair or are beginning to turn that color. Or for those of you who are thinking about abandoning your hair color and going ala natural……it’s very freeing I must say!
Is that your natural color?
Yes, I started turning gray at the age of 14 years old. I started coloring my hair in between the age of 16 and 17 years old. This is also what led me to go to Cosmetology School, figuring I would be coloring my hair the rest of my life, why not learn to do my own? Plus I had a great passion for hair and makeup. When I grew my hair out 2 years ago, I had been bleaching and toning it. The color had evolved, because it was the easiest to maintain, and I could go longer before it needed to be touched up. Now that it is all grown out, it’s been quite liberating. I do use a purple shampoo every couple of weeks, because I like the ever-so-slight lavender hue it leaves on my hair. Other then that its all mine….or as I like to say, “it’s all home grown.”
What shampoo and conditioner are you using? And what is the best for gray hair?
I like to try and always use a mild shampoo and light conditioner that are gentle on my hair. There are a lot of great products out now, but I’ve really liked using Oribe’s Silverati shampoo and conditioner. It’s a fairly new product from Oribe, and it’s been a game changer on my hair! Silver and Gray hair can range from wiry to really soft and silky, and mine unfortunately is a mix of both. I would use a shampoo and conditioner, and it would either leave my hair course or so soft it wouldn’t hold curl well and was too flat. These two Oribe products work great on both those areas leaving my hair easy to deal with whether I’m wearing it straight or adding a bit of curl. It also has some blue and silver pigments in the shampoo that help with yellow tones which sometimes show up with silver or gray hair. This yellow tone can be from the minerals in your water or can be caused by too high of a heat setting when using a blow dryer or hot tools. Make sure to use products that will help to protect your hair when drying and using hot tools and also will protect against the elements.
Gray and silver hair is a little more delicate then other hair colors and needs to be treated as such…with TLC.
