I’ve rounded up my favorite basics that are the foundation of fall outfits for women over 50! Fall is the perfect time to reassess your wardrobe. Summer styles are disappearing from the shelves, and the weather’s cooling down (for Georgia, that means we’re in the low 80s instead of the high 90s). My favorite thing to do this time of year is to go into my closet and pull out all of my clothes, and I mean all of them.
Why? Because it’s that time of the year. Time for a reset! First, I donate any of the summer clothes I know I won’t wear next year. Then, it’s on to the basics.
Tops + Tees
Basics are the foundation of my closet, and they should be yours too! We’ve gotta have those classic tees, timeless jackets, and effortless pants. These basics are the foundation of a wardrobe. From there, add funky shoes or an oversized blazer. Layer on whatever fall trends or styles make you feel fresh and radiant. But first, we’ve got to get those basics lined up.
Basic tees are a must all year long. For fall, I love having a mix of short sleeves and long sleeves. Even in the fall, some afternoons in Georgia can get pretty warm. Plus, you can always layer a cardigan, button-up shirt, or jacket over your tee. For me, fall style is all about layering those basics.
Color-wise, I adore neutral and earthy tones for fall. Think browns, creams, black, gray, olive green, and more.
I’m loving Banana Republic’s slub cotton boxy tees this season. They’re the perfect mix of comfy and put-together and come in those lovely neutral tones. Plus, how perfect are these J. Crew fitted long-sleeve tees for layering?
When it comes to pants in the fall, I don’t shy away from keeping a few pairs of shorts around. Again, it’s all about layering. Depending on where you live, you can still wear shorts with a sweater or jacket and a pair of booties.
With pants, we’re going with neutrals again. Remember, these are the basics that you can layer or style with anything. My favorites are cream, khaki, black, olive green, and brown.
Everyone needs a classic pair of trousers for fall, and how perfect are these khaki Madewell Harlow wide-leg pants? For comfy and easy pull-on pants, I’m obsessed with this Banana Republic wool-blend pair.
You can never go wrong with a jean jacket in the fall. It’s a classic, and it’s never going out of style. I love throwing my jean jacket over any outfit and instantly feeling put together. So, I rounded up a few of my favorites.
I’m loving the fun tie-up detail on the Madwell and Wash Lab Denim jackets. Or, go for a classic look with Tommy Hilfiger’s timeless jacket. Whichever you choose, you can’t go wrong with a denim jacket in your wardrobe.
Let’s chat about coats. Depending on where you live, fall can be that weird in-between kind of weather. I find myself ready to run out the door and thinking, do I need a coat? That’s where trench coats come in!
If you want a good coat, always go for a trench coat. For fall, I like grabbing one that’s not too long. I like for my fall trench coat to hit about mid-thigh. Trench coats are the perfect transitional piece because you can control their warmth by choosing how much you layer under them. Plus, a lot of trench coats come with a removable lining for added warmth once winter hits.
You can never go wrong with a classic J. Crew or Banana Republic trench coat. I promise you’ll get a ton of wear out of it.
Fall outfits for women over 50 are all about getting your basics right. Now that you have the perfect basics, start to layer! Grab a t-shirt, a jean jacket, and pull on some trousers. Then, add your personal style. Choose from sneakers, booties, Birkenstocks with socks. Add on jewelry and hats. Make it your own. Looking for the perfect makeup look to go with your fall style?
