Fashion trends come and go with the change of every season–but no wardrobe is complete without the essentials. These are your go-to pieces that you rely on to create almost every outfit. No matter how many times I transition, purge, or organize my closet, there are certain pieces that remain a fashion staple. So, if you’re looking to revamp your style this summer season, you need to know what they are.
The 5 fashion staples for summer I recommend every woman (regardless of age) has in their closet are tank tops, denim jackets, khaki shorts, jeans, and a fun pair of sandals. With every summer season that rolls around, these tend to be the essential pieces that I wear throughout the week and take on vacation.
The first step to building a chic summer wardrobe is to invest in these timeless garments that never go out of style. To read about and shop all the items every summer closet requires, just keep scrolling.
Scoop Neck Tank Tops
Tank tops are always going to be the perfect addition to your favorite jeans, shorts, and skirts in the summer. I’m now trying to recall when I started wearing tank tops. I’d have to say it was when I was younger, and it carried over to my adult life. I like the style of this year’s tank tops because they come up a little bit higher on your neck. The ones that are ribbed and made with a blend of soft cotton and spandex are my favorite! I prefer wearing basic colors like white, gray, black, cream, or camel. That’s not to say I don’t have bright colors in these particular tops, but these colors are what I wear the most each year.
Whether your wardrobe tends to be classic colors or bold and colorful, these five colors will go well with all of the above. Tank tops are tops that look good worn alone or as a laying piece under any lightweight jacket, blazer, or trench. Plus, there’s nothing sexier than a woman showing off her shoulders.
As far as jackets go, I tend to gravitate toward a denim jacket for the summer. If you tend to dress up more, a blazer would be more in line for you. We go to the beach several times in the summer, and I always bring a denim jacket. It’s perfect for morning and evening weather and will keep you warm when the temperatures start to drop. A denim jacket is so durable and goes well over sundresses, shorts, workout clothes and well, basically anything else that you would bring to go to the beach. It even looks good over your bathing suit! When traveling abroad, I typically pack a denim jacket and either a light trench coat or a blazer. Investing in a denim jacket is a must- simply because this is one of those garments you can wear all year long.
When looking for sandals to wear this of year I looked for sandals that were on the trendy side to add a little pizzazz to my warm weather outfits. I usually look for a low heel sandal that is easy to slide on and off, which means I look for a slide or mule type style. This year I found these cool twisted taupe sandals by Steve Madden. They are extremely comfortable and look so fab with these 5 Fashion Staples for Summer.
Having a flattering, versatile pair of khaki shorts in your summer wardrobe is necessary- especially when the weather is really hot, and you want to break away from the denim.
I know I’m probably going to get a little push back on the different lengths of shorts, but I always want to stay true to myself. With that being said, I like all different lengths of shorts and skirts. I don’t think age plays into this, I think it’s what you are comfortable in and feel confident in wearing. I go for a khaki color and that color can ranges from a dark golden hue to a lighter almond color. The point is to stay in the neutral family while looking for shorts. The idea is to be able to get the most wears out of fewer pieces or if you are starting to curate your closet, it’s about getting pieces that will last over time.
Straight and Wide-legged Denim
The last item on my staple list is denim, a pair of jeans to jump into and wear with my tank tops and summer blouses. This year I pulled out a lightweight wide legged pair of jeans. This flowy denim can be worn dressed up or down with heels or flats. The second style I pulled was this relaxed cropped straight leg. I like these jeans because they look stylish with sneakers and puffed up with these trendy slides.
Those are my 5 fashion staples for summer. Don’t be afraid to try out the latest trends this summer season, but also remember that simple staples like the ones mentioned above will form your wardrobe’s foundation.
